Chinese New Year lasts a LONG time--fifteen days I think, and perhaps it is still going on . . . I am pretending that it is, anyway, at least through the weekend, because there's no other celebration on the horizon till St. Patrick's Day! And, to very loosely paraphrase Helen Keller, life is either a never-ending party or it is nothing! (she said daring adventure, but she was a bolder soul than I; the milder pleasures of food, convivial company, etc. are enough for me)
Last weekend Libby, Leilei, Kit, Pierre, and I had a grand time sharing dim sum with good friends at Hei Le Moon. After that we watched lion dances! As usual, the kids were terrified, but we made them stand out there, listening to the firecrackers, and dodging the hot ashes, for their own good! Sarah had brought awesome pig stick ornaments, so that helped them bear it.
We were lucky enough to see Gund Kwok's performance--my friend Anne told me about this female lion dance troupe--the only all-women troupe in New England, I think. It is my ambition that Libby and Leilei will one day join them! Of course, previous ambitions for my children included Julian becoming a Shakespearean actor, and Kit going to Wellesley, so you see how that all works out.
These websites give tons of info on Chinese New Year, and on Gund Kwok as well:
