At the Zoo

Sunday Team Libby and Leilei and I had brunch with my friend Ricky and her lovely daughter Miranda, and then we went to the zoo!
It was a freezing cold "spring" day, so we stuck to the indoor exhibits, the gorillas and the bird house.
You know the expression "it was a zoo"??? Well, it was far from a zoo at the zoo. Very few people were there. All the animals were pretty active and we were able to see lots of interesting behaviors.
For example, Little Joe (always a problem) was defecating and then scooping it up and eating it. Gross. Ricky knows all about animals, especially primates, (she is the executive director and founder of an environmental learning center, "e" inc.) She explained that this could have been a boredom activity, and that perhaps, given their vegetarian and limited diets, gorillas might not find this practice unappealing. Well, it looked downright psychotic to me, but what do I know?

I also was able to see the mother gorilla Kiki nursing her newest baby Kimani. Kiki sat right next to the glass, and I could look right into Kimani's eyes. What an adorable baby!
Libby brought her camera, and ran from window to window snapping pictures. It was all about the picture with her. A budding photojournalist.
Leilei was very excited about all the animals, and spotted many of the hidden ones.

Are zoos bad? I guess they are. But I'm glad we do have opportunities to observe animals.
I'm conflicted. What else is new?
