I have a complicated relationship with Henry David.
Love the writing, admire the life--
but though I agree with much of what he says, especially about books ("the carriers of civilization") and rules ("any fool can make a rule, and any fool with mind it") , I just can't get away from the fact that he's an awful know-it-all and nag. I guess because he knows my weaknesses. I can't simplify, simplify--and far from avoiding any occasion that requires new clothes, I welcome such occasions--yea, I seek them out, unfortunately.
Well, he was supposedly a great influence on, and some say a big crush of, my hero Louisa May, so I know he is worthy of my continued attention, which I display by re-reading Walden most years--and trying to fit in a visit to Walden Pond every summer.
Others have paid much finer tribute to Henry David this year--including Auntie Gail--check out her haiku on this website (Gail Renz--she should have won!!!!!)http://www.thoreaufarm.org/articles/haiku_poems.html
